WHEREAS, there is an ever-increasing need, both nationally and locally, for donated organs and tissue that can save lives, give hope and restore health; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated there are over 115,000 persons awaiting an organ transplant nationally, including over 2,500 New Jersey residents, and hundreds of Newark residents, with a new person being added to the transplant list every ten (10) minutes; and

WHEREAS, one organ and tissue donor may save up to eight (8) lives, restore sight to two (2) people and heal the lives of seventy-five (75) others; and

WHEREAS, in 2022, (380) generous donors from New Jersey gave the gift of life through organ and tissue; and

WHEREAS, it is important that Newark residents learn about organ, tissue, blood and cornea donation, and discuss this vital health issue with their families and their doctors and raise awareness of the importance of donating; and

WHEREAS, every human life holds inherent dignity and matchless value, and it is critical that Newark residents consider becoming donors and share their wishes with their loved ones; and

WHEREAS, the Departments of Health, Education, Transportation and the State's two (2) organ procurement organizations - the New Jersey Sharing Network and Gift of Life Donor Program are committed to saving and restoring the lives of those in need of organ, tissue and cornea, transplantation by continuing to increase public awareness of the importance of becoming a registered donor.
