WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-E, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, residents of Portuguese descent have made tremendous contributions to the success of the City of Newark’s cultural, economic and social progress; and
WHEREAS, since its inception, Newark’s Annual Portuguese Day Parade has the distinction of being not only the largest cultural festival celebrating Portuguese heritage and culture in the State of New Jersey, but one of the largest in the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of Ferry Street, from Penn Station to Wilson Avenue, as Portugal Avenue.
2. The name of the said street shall remain Ferry Street in its entirety.
STATEMENT:
This resolution hereby authorizes the renaming of Ferry Street, from Penn Station to Wilson Avenue as Portugal Avenue, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
