WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Roberto A. Madan, one of Newark’s most distinguished Hispanic business leader, was born and educated in Havana, Cuba where he taught physical education for fifteen (15) years before relocating to the United States in the aftermath of Castro’s Cuban Revolution in 1959; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Madan settled in Newark, New Jersey, where he established himself as an astute businessman and entrepreneur becoming the owner/operator of the first McDonald’s restaurant located in the City of Newark. He went on to eventually own eight (8) McDonald’s restaurants throughout New Jersey, including two (2) in Newark located at 561 McCarter Highway and 621 Broadway; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Madan received numerous business and civic awards, including commendations from the City of Newark, for his many years of service, dedication and commitment to Newark’s growth and development.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Mulberry Street and Chestnut Street as “Roberto A. Madan Way”.
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Mulberry Street and Chestnut Street in its entirety.

This resolution hereby authorizes the naming of the intersection of Mulberry Street and Chestnut Street as “Roberto A. Madan Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
