WHEREAS, the Municipal Council of the City of Newark affirms upholding the principles of diversity, inclusivity, and mutual respect to create a community that values its diverse cultures, religions, and citizens; and
WHEREAS, this Country was founded on the principles of religious freedom and democracy, safeguarded by the U.S. Constitution that allows for any American to manifest their beliefs in public or private; and
WHEREAS, there has been a rash of attacks on said fundamental freedoms, throughout the Country and the State of New Jersey, which has eroded the central pillar of religious liberties; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark has a proud history of promoting the importance of religious diversity, and an individual's civil rights should not be violated based on his or her particular religion; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark will continue to protect and defend against religious oppression, and we condemn any attempt at infringing on religious liberties; and
WHEREAS, the right to freedom of religion applies to all Americans; and the City of Newark will not tolerate this rising tide of religious persecution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council declares the City of Newark to be a safe haven for religious freedom and expression, and for those seeking refuge from religious persecution.
