WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PDF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Carlos Manuel Campos dedicated his career as a doctor to Newark's Ironbound community for over fifty (50) years; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Campos, who was born in Estrella, Camaguay, Cuba, began his dream of becoming a medical doctor at the Universidad de la Havana. He fled to Spain after the Cuban Revolution in 1961, and completed his medical studies at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, before emigrating to the United States in 1962, and opening his practice in the East Ward; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Campos became a pillar in the Ironbound community and his continuing contributions to the social, civic and health of the community contributed greatly to the revitalization of the East Ward community and spearheaded its emergence as one of the most desirable urban communities in the northeast to live and play.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Ferry Street and McWhorter Street as "Dr. Carlos M. Campos Way".
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Ferry Street and McWhorter Street in their entirety.
