WHEREAS, the Municipal Council acknowledges the history and legacy of its citizenry in relation to the history of these United States of America; and

WHEREAS, the Municipal Council supports the renaming of the City's Washington Park bounded by Washington and Broad Streets and Washington Place to Harriet Tubman Square, which will have a Tubman monument called "Shadow of a Face" which replace the previously erected statute of Christopher Columbus; and

WHEREAS, this marks a pivotal moment acknowledging underrepresented histories that all Americans and Newark residents can value providing for an opportunity for greater education around civic engagement by promoting Black anti-slavery activism.

NOW THJEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council supports the renaming and transformation of the City's Washington Park bounded by Washington and Broad Streets and Washington Place to Harriet Tubman Square and the City's Application to the New Jersey Historic Preservation Office.

2. A copy of this Resolution shall be forward to the Mayor of the city of Newark, the Business Administrator and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection - New Jersey Historic Preservation Office.
