WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Figueroa was born in Morovis, Puerto Rico in 1945. He later moved to Newark, New Jersey in 1964 from his hometown of Vega Baja. Considered one of Newark's great Latino guitarists and musician, he immediately began playing in local clubs with his first band Boriquenes. Always yearning to share his musical talents internationally, he realized that dream after teaming with his musical partner, Yomo Toro and began playing with a who's who of famous musicians, including Hector Lavae, Celia Cruz, Wynton Marsalis and the El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico to name a few; and

WHEREAS, Ruben Figueroa was an active member of his beloved Newark community, always the first to volunteer his musical talents whenever and wherever there was a need. A bigger than life personality with a deep love and commitment for his family, he loved life, loved his music and loved Newark more.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Park Avenue and Clifton Avenue as "Ruben Figueroa Way."
