WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary ad ceremonial purposes; and

WHEREAS, Theresa Clara Slade Cavaness was born January 11, 1924 in Uniontown, Alabama. Ms. Cavaness began playing the piano by ear at the age of three (3), received formal instruction at age four (4), and at age eleven (11) accepted her first position as a church organist at the Faith Temple Broadcasting Service of South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Cavaness attended the very prestigious High School in Philadelphia, Zecker-Hahn Conservatory (now the University of Arts) and in her senior year the family moved to Newark, New Jersey where she became a member of St. James AME Church in 1939 where she was a member until her death; and

WHEREAS, Ms. Cavaness continued sharing her gifts in music with the New Jersey Philharmonic Glee Club, the Roland Hayes Glee Club, and the St. James Gospel Chorus. She met the love of her life during her senior year in high school at East Side High School and married John Cavaness on May 6, 1941 at St. James AME Church. Through this union of forty (40) years they had three (3) beautiful children. Theresa Clara Slade Cavaness will always be remembered for her love of music, family and God.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
