WHEREAS, the City desires to denounce the recent decision by Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis and eighteen (18) other states for legislation banning and removing books on the history of people of color, indigenous groups and other minorities from the education system; and

WHEREAS, American history should include education regarding all people of color, including, but not limited to, Hall of Famers, Roberto Enrique Clemente, Henry "Hank" Aaron, and Jack "Jackie" Robinson, Justice Sonia Maria Sotomayor, and singer, Ursula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso, known as Celia Cruz; and

WHEREAS, the City understands that Governor Ron DeSantis, who championed Florida Law HB 1467 and Governor Greg Abbott, who championed Texas Law HB 3979 and 17 other similar laws, violate the First Amendment by depriving students of the right to receive information and ideas as the U.S. Supreme Court has determined.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

1. The Municipal Council denounces Governor Ron DeSantis, the State of Florida and eighteen (18) other states for legislation banning and removing books on the history of people of color, indigenous groups and other minorities from the education system.
