WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

                      WHEREAS, Jerry Gottesman, was a noted real estate mogul, who was recognized as a leader in the specialized segments of real estate, including parking lots, mini storage buildings, office space, residential development and land entitlements; and 

 

                      WHEREAS, his remarkable real estate career began in Newark in 1956 with the founding of his first parking lot with his brother, Harold, Edison Parking, which became the cornerstone of his real estate empire; and

 

WHEREAS, over the course of sixty (60) years, Edison Parking grew into thirty-six (36) locations throughout the tri-state area, and in 1978, recognizing a need for storage for the millions of apartment dwellers in Manhattan, he founded Manhattan’s first self-storage business, Manhattan Mini Storage, which grew into seventeen (17) buildings occupying over 2.5 million square feet; and

 

WHEREAS, aside from his revolutionary real estate operations and holdings, he was a visionary who helped in the revitalization of downtown Newark, working with policy makers and landowners; and

 

WHEREAS, among his numerous philanthropic and civic engagements included serving as a Board Member of the Newark Museum, the Regional Plan Association, NYU Rudin Center and NYU Schack Institute of Real Estate. 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Edison Place and Columbia Street as “Jerry Gottesman Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Edison Place and Columbia Street in their entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Edison Place and Columbia Street as “Jerry Gottesman Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
