WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PDF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Ms. Nora G. Darden-McNeil was born to a family of nine (9) siblings in Wilson, North Carolina in 1934, where she was affectionately known as “Baby Sista”; and

 

WHEREAS, after arriving in Newark as a young lady “Baby Sista”,  worked various jobs throughout the City with her sisters, eventually gravitating to the City’s bustling night life and entertainment scene as a barmaid and, where her effervescent personality, poise and grace enamored her to all and, in great demand to work in the City’s most popular night spots; and

 

WHEREAS, her entrepreneurial spirit led to several successful business ventures, including producing fashion shows and partnering in a restaurant,  before venturing into social justice where she became a chef, retiring from the New Jersey Division of Justice, Law and Order; and

 

WHEREAS, despite her grueling Saturday night schedules, she was a faithful member of God’s house on Sunday, and a leading vocalist in several choirs heard over the radio.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Springfield Avenue and South 18th Street as “Nora G. Darden-McNeil Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Springfield Avenue and South 18th Street in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Springfield Avenue and South 18th Street as “Nora G. Darden-McNeil Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
