WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Malachi D. Rountree was born in Morven, Georgia and his family moved to Newark, New Jersey, where he attended Arts High School, Shaw University, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree.  He also attended Howard University Divinity School in Washington, D.C where he received his Master’s Degree, continuing his education at Crozier Theological. Receiving his M.Div. and finally receiving his Doctorate from Virginia State University; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Dr. Rountree was ordained in 1964 by Capital View Baptist Association in Washington, D.C., he along with his late wife Madame Louise Scott-Rountree founded Good Neighbor Baptist in Newark, New Jersey where he served as the church’s first pastor from 1970 until 1982; and

 

WHEREAS, through the unyielding and unwavering contributions of civic giants such as Reverend Dr. Rountree was a notable individual with many accomplishments and accolades within his own right, the City of Newark’s re-emergence as a leading urban city is a testament to their lifetime of achievement and unselfish service.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Parkview Terrace and Chancellor Avenue as “Reverend Dr. Malachi D. Rountree Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Parkview Terrace and Chancellor Avenue in their entirety.

This resolution authorizes the renaming of the intersection of Parkview Terrace and Chancellor Avenue as “Reverend Dr. Malachi D. Rountree Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
