                     WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, since its establishment in 1957, St. Mark Free Will Baptist Church, became a beacon of light and a citadel of hope for the numerous residents living in the Woodland Avenue and South 11th Street community; and 

 

WHEREAS, under the stern leadership and stewardship of Senior Bishop Collie Edwers, St. Mark Church quickly became the anchor of the community, providing necessary services and programs, such as, day care and pre-school services, soup kitchens, clothing and food pantries, after-school programs, spiritual guidance, he was someone genuinely concerned about their well-being; and

 

WHEREAS, during Senior Bishop Collie Edwers’ thirty-seven (37) years as Pastor of the St. Mark Church, he became a beloved member and father figure of the community with his magnetic personality and southern flavor of preaching and loving. He was totally committed to serving the community especially the youth, providing free field trips to various amusement centers, movies, skate parks, and exposing them to the wonders outside of their immediate community; and 

 

WHEREAS, Senior Bishop Collie Edwers’ remarkable legacy and contributions to the Woodland Avenue and South 11th Street community and the City of Newark extended well beyond St. Mark Church, he was the Presiding Bishop of the Middle Atlantic Conference for twenty-nine (29) years, First Vice-General Bishop of the Unified Free Will Baptist Churches and Treasurer of the National Will Baptist Churches and Treasurer of the National Free Will Baptist Conference.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Woodland Avenue and South 11th Street as “Sr. Bishop Collie Edwers Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said street shall remain Woodland Avenue and South 11th Street in their entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Woodland Avenue and South 11th Street as “Sr. Bishop Collie Edwers Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
