WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, there are few more substantial examples of a pillar of community than Anne Little. Born in Marion, South Carolina, at the age of 16 Anne relocated to Newark, New Jersey. She graduated from Barringer High School. She would go on to find a home on South 19th Street in the West Ward in 1962 with her children and husband Leonard Little, a place she’d leave her mark on for years to come; and
WHEREAS, she began her spiritual journey as a Methodist member in her previous home of South Carolina, but once a Newark citizen her first home church was New Saint Phillips Church, on Stratford Place in Newark, New Jersey. She would later be a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where she was a devout Missionary, a member of the Pastor Aide Committee, and for over 30 years, the president of W.L. Lee Choral Ensemble. In 2009 after the passing of Reverend Wesley Lee she followed her family to New Life Body of Christ Church where she adopted the role of church Mother; and
WHEREAS, in terms of employment Anne held many roles, mostly in the medical field: She worked for the A.R.C. where she helped disabled children with their physical ailments. Aside from these, she worked at Berry Biscuits as a cook, and at Woodbridge State School as a supervisor working closely with children with special needs; and
WHEREAS, with her natural southern mannerism and charm, Anne Little would go on to adopt an almost motherly role amongst the neighborhood children, who she looked after as her own. She never withheld a kind word or favor for her neighbors. Often, she’d bring in the summer by inviting them to her yard to enjoy grilled food and a swim in her pool. She was a strong and firm caretaker with a heart of pure kindness. She would go on to become more renown and wellrespected as the years accrued; there was not a single young man on South 19th Street that would allow “Miss Anne” to bring in her own groceries, or to sweep her own stoop; and
WHEREAS, she witnessed the hardships her city faced as well as the moments of elation and historic success, and remained ever proud of being a Newark resident. Currently she still lives in the same home on South 19th Street, a place she has called home for well over sixty years. She is and will always be a beloved matriarch who values spirituality, family and community above all else.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of 13th Avenue and South 19th Street as “Anne Little Way”.
