WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Mrs. Juanita Gray was a lifelong Newark resident, who dedicated her life to serving her Dayton Street and Frelinghuysen Avenue community with pride and passion; and

 

WHEREAS, Juanita was the “unofficial” mother of the Dayton Street Projects, raising her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in addition to providing love and direction to all children in the 10-story complex; and

 

WHEREAS, after the closing and demolition of the Dayton Street Projects, Juanita Gray relocated her family to new residences on Frelinghuysen Avenue, where she continued her advocacy for support and services for her community, with a focus its’ senior residents; and

 

WHEREAS, due to her strong admiration from the community and stern leadership as Tenant President, the Newark Housing Authority decided she was the ideal candidate to manage the senior building.  A position she held proudly until her passing in 2010.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Evergreen Avenue and Frelinghuysen Avenue as Juanita Gray Place.

 

2.                     The official name of the said street shall remain Evergreen Avenue and Frelinghuysen Avenue in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Evergreen Avenue and Frelinghuysen Avenue as Juanita Gray Place, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
