WHEREAS, Melba Moore (nee Hill), singer/actress, television personality, can arguably be acclaimed  as Newark’s Arts High School most illustrious alumna, and the City of Newark’s most prolific and greatest entertainer spanning the past fifty (50) years; and 

 

WHEREAS, Melba Moore, a four (4) time Grammy Award nominee, Tony Award winner, star in her own television series on CBS, was a guest performer on numerous television shows, including Johnny Carson, Dick Cavett, David Frost and Soul Train and a movie actress, began her professional career after college teaching music in the Newark School System, before rocketing into stardom as Dionne in the musical, ”Hair”; and 

 

WHEREAS, her fame reached super-stardom in the early 70’s with her debut album, which earned her a Grammy nomination For Best New Artists, and co-starring in the television series, “Clifton Davis”; and

 

WHEREAS, over the past fifty (50) years, Melba Moore has continued to entertain and become one of America’s most recognizable figure in the entertainment world, garnering praise and accolades from her peers as a professional.

                                          

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1.                     The Municipal council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd. and Mercer Street as “Melba Moore Plaza”.

 

2.                     The official name shall remain Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., and Mercer Street in their entirety.

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd., as “Melba Moore Plaza”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
