WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

 WHEREAS, Elvira I. Galante, one of Newark’s pioneering female business owners, established the Galante Funeral Home in 1934, becoming one of the first and only funeral and mortuary services owned and operated by a female in Newark and one of only a handful in the United States; and

 

WHEREAS, as a female business owner in a predominantly male-oriented industry, Elvira overcame many obstacles that tested her fortitude and business acumen; and 

 

WHEREAS, together with the wholehearted support and assistance from her family the Galante Funeral Home prospered and became a fixture in the Ironbound community. Through the years their contributions to the community is immeasurable and truly worthy of recognition and a shining example for generations to come of true community “pride and ownership”.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Pacific Street and Walnut Street as “Galante Plaza”.

 

2. The official name of said streets shall remain Pacific Street and Walnut Street in its entirety.

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Pacific and Walnut Streets “Galante Plaza”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
