WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Luis Reyes, was born in a small town of Portugal and at the age of 16 emigrated to Venezuela to join extended family members; and
WHEREAS, by the age of 21, through hard work, determination and perseverance he became the part owner of a bakery; and
WHEREAS, while visiting his native Portugal, he met the love of his life, Isaura Reis, who later became his adoring wife of thirty-four years. As economic and political tensions became increasingly untenable in Venezuela, the couple made the decision to immigrate to the United States and Newark, New Jersey;
WHEREAS, after arriving in Newark in 1988, he began working in his father-in laws’ recently purchased Park Avenue Supermarket, which became outside of his family, the love of his life. After his father-in-law retired he took over the operations of the community market and helped transformed the changing community as he became a pillar of the community, offering more than groceries, warm meals, financial assistance and touched countless lives with his smile, generosity and kindness; and
WHEREAS, through the years the numerous contributions attributed to the late Luis Reis to the Newark community is immeasurable and truly worthy of a lasting recognition and ceremonial renaming of Ridge Street and Park Avenue as “Luis Reis Way.”
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Ridge Street and Park Avenue as “Luis Reis Way”.
2. The official name of said streets shall remain Ridge Street and Park Avenue.
STATEMENT
This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Ridge Street and Park Avenue for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
