WHEREAS, on or about August 22, 2025, on behalf of the City of Newark (hereinafter the “City”), the Public Safety Director submitted an application to the Office of the Attorney General, State Athletic Board requesting funding in the amount of Sixty-Five Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($65,000.00) from the FY2025 Attorney General’s Youth Community Outreach Program for New Jersey Amateur Boxing Program, to support the police initiatives to strengthen police-community relationships by engaging at risk youth in positive, structured activities (“Application”); and
WHEREAS, as a result of this Application, the City has received notification of receipt of the Grant Award in connection with this Application, in the amount not to exceed Sixty-Five Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($65,000.00) (“Grant Funds”), for the period beginning January 1, 2026, and ending December 31, 2026, to fund a youth boxing program; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to the terms of the Application, a copy of which is attached hereto, the City is required to submit a resolution from the Newark Municipal Council authorizing acceptance of the Grant Funds; and
WHEREAS, the Public Safety Director desires to accept and expend the Grant Funds for the period beginning January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026, for the purpose of implementing a youth boxing program that will provide at risk youth interventions and pathways to successful adulthood through boxing fitness training and life skills workshops/seminars, with no City funds required.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Mayor of the City of Newark and/or his designee, the Public Safety Director are hereby authorized to submit an application to the Office of Attorney General, State Athletic Board, on behalf of the City of Newark, requesting grant funding in the amount of Sixty-Five Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($65,000.00) from the FY 2025 Attorney General’s Youth Community Outreach Program, with no city funds required, a copy of the Application is attached hereto and made a part hereof.
2. The Mayor and/or his designees, and the Public Safety Director, are hereby authorized to accept the grant award in the amount not to exceed Sixty-Five Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($65,000.00) (“Grant Funds”) for the period of January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026, to fund a youth boxing program.
3. The Mayor and/or his designees, and the Public Safety Director, are hereby authorized to enter into and execute the grant documents with the Office of the Attorney General to receive and expend the FY2025 Attorney General’s Youth Community Outreach Amateur Boxing Program award for the purpose of implementing strategies to reduce youth involvement in crime and promote public safety.
4. No municipal funds are required for receipt or acceptance of this grant award.
5. The Municipal Council hereby ratifies the application and acceptance of the grant funds from January 1, 2026, to the date of adoption of this authorizing Resolution.
6. The Public Safety Director shall file a fully-executed copy of the FY2025 Attorney General’s Youth Community Outreach Amateur Boxing Program Application, the grant award letter, and the grant agreement in the Office of the City Clerk.
STATEMENT
This Resolution ratifies and authorizes the Mayor and/or his designees, and the Public Safety Director, to apply for and accept grant funding for the FY2025 Attorney General’s Youth Community Outreach Amateur Boxing Program in the amount not to exceed $65,000.00 from the Office of the Attorney General, and to execute any agreement necessary to receive and expend the grant funds, for the period of January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026, for the purpose of implementing strategies to prevent youth involvement in crime, through the implementation of an amateur boxing program. No municipal funds are required for receipt of acceptance of this grant award.
