WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Norma Jones has resided in the City of Newark for more than 60 years and has resided in the West Ward for over 45 years. During which time she dedicated more than four decades to public health and community service. She has and serves as an Essex County Democratic Committee Member, West Ward District 37 for over 45 years; and   

                     

WHEREAS, she retired after working 40 years in the pharmaceutical industry, in the field of microbiology research; however, she continued to apply her scientific background well beyond her retirement by assisting a multitude of Newark residents in navigating complex City services. Norma, a social component within herself, provided additional assistance that strengthens the community engagement between the public sector and government entities; and

 

WHEREAS, Norma Jones led a successful effort to restore the financial solvency of the Unified Vailsburg Services Organization working alongside the late Honorable Senator Ronald L. Rice, Sr, and other political dignitaries in preserving vital community resources. She spearheaded the critical installation of stop signs and traffic signals in and around elementary schools from Stanford and South Orange Avenue down through 18th Avenue, which improved the safety for thousands of children and families; and   

 

WHEREAS, in recognition of Norma Jones lifelong service, scientific contributions, and unwavering commitment to the residents of Newark, this street dedication honors her enduring impact on public health, safety and community empowerment all of which embodies the spirit of civic responsibility and compassion, all of which acts to strengthen the City of Newark.

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Cliff Street and Oakland Terrace, as Norma Jones Way.

 

2. The official name of said streets shall remain as Cliff Street and Oakland Terrace, in its entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Cliff Street and Oakland Terrace, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
