WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, James Edward Womack, ll, a lifelong Newark resident and member of the famed Newark-based gospel family singing group “The Womacks Singers”, began his extensive and successful entrepreneurial career at an early age, ranging from landscaping, international car sales, sports and the  music and film industry; and

 

WHEREAS, shortly after graduating from Glassboro State College, he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he built and maintained relationships with people throughout the world, especially in the entertainment industry. He developed working relationships with iconic industry figures such as Lauryn Hill, Kenny “Babyface” Edmunds, Andre Harrell, Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, Mark Levin and Michael Harris, a.k.a “Harry O”, founder of Death Row Records; and

 

WHEREAS, through his company Strictly Entertainment, LLC, he developed and managed various artistic and musical talents for several years before branching into the film industry where he developed success in the unique field of film funding. In addition, he founded the world’s first co-ed professional league, “Global Mixed Gender Basketball” and was working on several other initiatives before his untimely passing; and

 

WHEREAS, the Governing Body is seeking to maintain the legacy and accomplishments of outstanding Newark residents such as James Edward Womack, ll, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of South 10th Street and 14th Avenue as “James Edward Womack, ll Way”.

 

2. The official name of said streets shall remain as South 10th Street and 14th Avenue in its entirety.

This resolution hereby authorizes the naming of the intersection of South 10th Street and 14th Avenue, “James Edward Womack, ll Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
