WHEREAS, the City of Newark is a vibrant, diverse, and globally connected community whose rich cultural heritage is reflected through its dynamic culinary landscape; and
WHEREAS, the World Cup 2026 represents a historic global event that brings together nations, cultures, and communities in celebration of sport, unity, and shared humanity; and
WHEREAS, Newark stands as a gateway city, uniquely positioned to showcase its cultural diversity, economic vitality, and global spirit during this international moment; and
WHEREAS, Plusable has demonstrated outstanding leadership in producing Savor Newark 2026 | The Culinary Cup - United at the Table Symposium, an event that highlights local culinary talent, supports small businesses, and fosters dialogue at the intersection of food, culture, and economic opportunity; and
WHEREAS, the event will feature International Executive Chef Nelson Soares of Sult (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Sult (Cascais, Portugal), appearing directly from Brazil, who will present a live culinary experience that blends technique, storytelling, and cultural influence while offering curated tastings inspired by his culinary journey; and
WHEREAS, the event will include the Official Savor Newark Mentorship Signing, establishing a partnership between the Municipality of Cascais, Newark Vocational High School, the Newark Board of Education, and Plusable, providing an annual six-week culinary exchange opportunity in Cascais, Portugal for two students and one teacher from the Vocational High School Culinary Academy; and
WHEREAS, this partnership promotes mentorship, cultural exchange, and culinary innovation, empowering the next generation of culinary leaders while strengthening global connections rooted in shared heritage and opportunity; and
WHEREAS, Savor Newark 2026 brings together chefs, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and community stakeholders to promote workforce development, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic growth for all Newark residents; and
WHEREAS, the Diaspora-curated culinary experiences, representing countries participating in the World Cup 2026, reflect Newark’s global identity and celebrate the city’s diverse communities; and
WHEREAS, Savor Newark 2026 serves as a platform to elevate Newark as a culinary destination, stimulate local economic activity, and strengthen partnerships that benefit residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. Savor Newark 2026 | The Culinary Cup - United at the Table Symposium is hereby recognized and declared as the Official City of Newark Kickoff Event to the World Cup 2026.
2. The Municipal Council encourages residents, businesses, and community stakeholders to support and participate in this event, celebrating Newark’s culture, diversity, and economic vitality.
3. A copy of this Resolution be provided to Plusable and all relevant partners in recognition of their contributions to the City of Newark.
4. This Declaring of Intent is ratified to the date of adoption of this authorizing Resolution.
