  WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

                      WHEREAS, Imam Mustafa El-Amin, was born in Newark, New Jersey on November 13, 1957 and received his primary through high school education with in the Newark Public Schools System; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Imam Mustafa went on to receive a B.A. in Community Development and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, from Rutgers University, he additionally holds a certification in Special Education from Jersey City State College; and 

 

WHEREAS, he worked for the Newark Board of Education at its Central Office and later went on to teach Special Needs students at Camden Street School, Montgomery and Central High School; and

 

                     WHEREAS, through his work, he has traveled to Egypt, Mecca and Madinah, Saudi Arabia, Jerusalem and Bermuda and is the father of three children Mustafa, Mansa and Madinah; and  

 

                     WHEREAS, Imam El-Amin is CEO and Co-founder of Masjid Ibrahim Islamic Teachings and Development Center, in Newark, in addition to being the author of nine books, an educator and noted lecturer in the field of religion, and has achieved international acclaim as he was selected by a television producer from Europe to be the focus of a documentary on African American Muslims, which was held in Holland.

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Chancellor Avenue and Wainwright Street as “Imam Mustafa El-Amin Way”.

 

2. The official name of said streets shall remain as Chancellor Avenue and Wainwright Street in its entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Chancellor Avenue and Wainwright Street as “Imam Mustafa El-Amin Way” for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
