WHEREAS, Senate Bill No. 2925, sponsored by Senators Joseph R. Vitale, District 19 and Senator Nilsa Cruz-Perez, District 5, Co-Sponsored by Senators Cunningham, Pou, Lesniak, Stack and Weinberg, would amend Title 39 of the Revised Statutes of the State of New Jersey, to establish a driver’s license for residents who cannot prove legal presence in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the proposed legislation would require that the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) issue a driver’s license to a person who satisfies the requirements for the issuance of a basic driver’s license, but cannot prove legal presence in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the proposed legislation will require that applicants submit to MVC, proof of identity, date of birth, and residency in the State of New Jersey, by submitting documents as determined by the Chief Administrator of MVC; and
WHEREAS, this proposed legislation will assist the City of Newark and the Newark Police Department in keeping our City streets safe.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. It supports Senate Bill No.2925 and urges our State Legislators to pass this meaningful legislation.
2. That certified copies of this resolution be forwarded by the Office of the City Clerk to Senators Vitale and Cruz-Perez, the Senate President and the Essex County Delegation.
