The Keep America Beautiful MLK Jr. Corridor Community Grant will be used to expand tree canopy, amplify green space, clean and beautify the MLK Boulevard corridor, and install public art reflective of community identity and history.

WHEREAS, the City of Newark (“City”) desires to participate in the Keep America Beautiful Martin Luther King Jr. Corridor Community Grant Program (“Program”); and
WHEREAS, on or about February 25, 2025, on behalf of the City, the Office of Sustainability applied to the Program requesting grant funds to support tree planting, public art, and green beautification along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard; and
WHEREAS, as a result of this application, in May, 2025, the City was awarded a grant in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00), for the period of May 15, 2025 through December 31, 2025; and
WHEREAS, the Keep America Beautiful organization has agreed to provide a the Grant to the City for the purpose of enhancing the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard corridor through improved urban tree canopy, expanded public green space, public art installations, and litter and debris removal, as described in the City’s approved grant application; and
WHEREAS, the City will utilize the Grant funds to implement the above activities, which are aligned with the City’s goals of creating more equitable and vibrant public spaces, supporting climate resilience, and honoring cultural legacy through community-driven environmental improvements.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Mayor of the City of Newark (“City”), and/or his designee, the Business Administrator, is authorized to submit an application to Keep America Beautiful, requesting grant funding for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Corridor Community Grant Program.
2. The Municipal Council ratifies its authorization of this application from the date of the application submission, to the date of this authorizing Resolution.
3. Pursuant to this application, Keep America Beautiful has awarded the City a grant in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00), which is hereby accepted.
4. The Mayor and/or his designee, the Business Administrator, is hereby authorized to enter into the Grant Agreement and expend the Grant from Keep America Beautiful for the period commencing on May 15, 2025 through December 31, 2025.
5. The Municipal Council hereby ratifies the acceptance of this grant award from the date of the award, to the date of adoption of this authorizing resolution.
6. No municipal funds are required for the application or acceptance of this grant award.
7. The Business Administrator shall file a fully executed copy of the grant application and grant agreement in the Office of the City Clerk.
STATEMENT
This Resolution ratifies and authorizes the Mayor of the City of Newark, and/or his designee, the Business Administrator, to apply for and accept grant funds in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00) from Keep America Beautiful Martin Luther King, Jr. Corridor Community Grant Program. The grant supports environmental and cultural revitalization along Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard through tree planting, beautification, and public art. No Municipal funds are required for application or acceptance of this award.
