WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Octavio “Tave” Padilla was born in Newark, New Jersey and lived most of his life in the North Newark. Tave was a devoted family man and his heart and soul were inexplicably connected to the community he served.  Tave was the Co-Director of Youth Development and Recreation for the North Ward Center for sixteen (16) years and a Board Member of the Newark School Board of Education since 2016.  Tave also worked at Casa Israel Adult Medical Day Program assisting seniors.  Tave’s service included working as an Aide to New Jersey Senate President, Stephen Sweeney; a Legislative Aide to New Jersey State Senator, Nellie Pou; and Chief of Staff to Assemblyman Wilfredo Caraballo. Tave was a gentle giant and will always be loved deeply by his family and community; and

 

WHEREAS, Carmen “Tati” Vega served the City of Newark in various capacities.  Tati served at the North Ward center assisting senior citizens, as a social worker for early childhood intervention and as a Legislative Aide to Newark Municipal Council President, Mildred C. Crump for many dedicated years. Tati was a successful entrepreneur, owning her own business, Tati’s Unique Boutique.  Carmen was a resolute contributor to the advancement and progress of the City of Newark for many ways, in addition to her professional career.  She was a tireless volunteer for City of Newark initiatives.  Tati worked tirelessly for the City of Newark and assisting people in need.  Tati was a loving wife, parent and grandmother, her warm smile and demonstration of love will be remembered always by all who knew her; and

 

WHEREAS, Jesus Casiano, Jr., born in Newark, New Jersey on January 21, 1964 and relocated to Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico in 1976.  While in Puerto Rico, Jesus studied Political Science and Public Administration at the Inter-American University of San German from 1984 until 1989.  During his time in Puerto Rico, Jesus served in many political and governmental capacities in San Juan; Legislative Lobbyist for the Puerto Rico Governor and State Senate, Inter-Government Coordinator Public Policy Advisor; Special Assistant for the Puerto Rico Mayors Association; Strategy and Logistics Officer; Senate Finance Committee Officer; and President of the Governor’s Council on Youth Affairs. Jesus returned to Newark, New Jersey in 2007 and immediately joined the North Ward Center where he served as a Project Director for the Latino Institute and Hispanic Outreach and Advocacy Initiative Program.  Jesus served as a Legislative Aide for the North Ward Councilman, Anibal Ramos, Jr., since 2011 and worked with the Office of New Jersey State, Senator M. Teresa Ruiz, as a Senate Aide in May 2017.  Jesus volunteered his time and efforts to many causes and organizations.  Jesus enjoyed cooking, listening to music, playing dominos, the beach and telling stories.  All who knew Jesus will remember the gentle giant known as Jesus Casiano, Jr., dearly.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Parker Street as “Octavio “Tave” Padilla, Carmen “Tati” Vega, Jesus Casiano, Jr. Boulevard”.

 

2.                     This resolution is hereby ratified to the date of this authorizing resolution.

 

3.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Bloomfield Avenue and Parker Street in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution ratifies and authorizes the naming of the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and Parker Street as “Octavio “Tave” Padilla, Carmen “Tati” Vega, Jesus Casiano, Jr., Boulevard”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
