                      WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Minnie Allen, migrated to the City of Newark in 1968 from Mobile, Alabama at the age of seventeen and immediately began her lifelong service to the City of Newark, serving as a Teacher’s Aide at the Robert Treat School under the leadership of the former Superintendent of the Newark Board of Education, Eugene Campbell; and

 

WHEREAS, recognizing her tremendous leadership potential and zeal for public service and education, he encouraged her to enroll at Essex County College, where she began her higher educational journey earning an associate degree in Education and Urban Studies-where she met former Mayor Sharpe James-who encouraged her to continue her studies at Bloomfield College, all the while working tirelessly in after-school programs for the Newark Board of Education; and

 

WHEREAS, through former Mayor James, Minnie further expanded her commitment to public service by getting involved in community service and politics through the Sharpe James Civic Organization, playing an influential role in his victorious Mayoral election and administration; and

 

WHEREAS, Minnie later earned a M.S. degree from Jersey City State College, and earnestly worked for the City for over 35 years, assisting the youth and the unemployed seeking employment and training, becoming the City’s most influential “go to” person for employment opportunities, career training and vocational enhancement.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Osborne Terrace and Hawthorne Avenue as “Minnie Allen Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said street shall remain Osborne Terrace and Hawthorne Avenue in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Osborne Terrace and Hawthorne Avenue as “Minnie Allen Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
