                     WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, James and Mary Rone, were long-time community and housing activists, who were noted throughout the City of Newark and New Jersey for their strong advocacy for fair housing and job opportunities for low-income peoples; and  

 

WHEREAS, Mary Rone, a certified social worker, was nationally recognized as a tenant advocate and served on several national tenant advocacy organizations including HUD’s Rulemaking Advisory Committee, the National Association of  Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO), in addition to the State of New Jersey Association of Public and Subsidized Housing Residents, Inc. (NASPHR) and the long-time President of the influential Newark Tenant’s, Council, representing thousands of residents living in Newark Housing Authority public housing; and

 

WHEREAS, her social advocacy also extended to education and welfare, retiring in 2006 as Supervisor of the Office of Child Support Enforcement and serving as Hawkins Street School PTA President, where she advocated successfully for the opening of the Annex School Facility to maintain the low Teacher/Student ration for 5th and 6th graders; and 

 

WHEREAS, the legacy of James and Mary Rone’s tireless commitment and civic accomplishments, notwithstanding their political influence, extended well beyond their East Ward community and is worthy of recognition.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and Hawkins Street as “James and Mary Rone Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said street shall remain Roanoke Avenue and Hawkins Street in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Roanoke Avenue and Hawkins Street as “James and Mary Rone Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
