                      WHEREAS, Irish-Americans from organizations located primarily in Essex, Hudson, and Union counties came together in 1936 to form the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Inc., sponsor of New Jersey’s first and finest Saint Patrick’s Day Parade; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the 2018 Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will be led by Grand Marshal Joseph M. Taylor, retired Chairman and CEO of Panasonic Corporation of North America and Deputy Grand Marshal Josie Logue Tully of the Frank McGovern Association; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the 2018 Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will be dedicated to Essex County Sheriff Armando B. Fontoura, an honorary Irishman and strong supporter of the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade for many years; and

 

                     WHEREAS, in 2018, our City is once again pleased to welcome the Castlerea Brass and Reed Band for their eighth trip to Newark, declared a sister-city of Caslterea, County Roscommon, Ireland in December 1997 “to promote mutual understanding between peoples and to live in peace and friendship;” and

 

                     WHEREAS, under the leadership of the Grand Marshal and Deputy Grand Marshal, as well as General Chairman Michael D. Byrne, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Inc., is also the sponsor of Irish Heritage Week in Newark featuring a week-long promotion for restaurants, Art and Essay Contests for students of the Archdiocese of Newark, and Annual Student History Breakfast at the Newark Public Library, the Sixth Annual Saint Patrick’s Day High School Band Competition for high school bands from across New Jersey; and charitable giving program for worthy institutions such as St. John’s Soup Kitchen, the National Guard State Family Readiness Council, St. Benedict’s Prep, Saint Vincent Academy and the Epilepsy Foundation of New Jersey; and

 

                     WHEREAS, the Municipal Council wishes to publicly recognize the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Inc., and their plans for a week of spiritual, educational, cultural, charitable, and economic activities that will enrich the fabric of the City.

 

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE NEWARK MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. In recognition of the many contributions that Irish-Americans have made to the City of Newark and continue to make and occasioned by the 83rd Year of the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Newark.

 

2. The Municipal Council does hereby declare the week of March 9, 2018 through March 16, 2018 as Irish Heritage Week in Newark and March 16, 2018 as Saint Patrick’s Day in Newark.

 

3. Be it further resolved that the Municipal Council of the City of Newark, hereby, designates Mulberry Street as Taylor Boulevard, Center Street as Tully Boulevard, Central Avenue as Fontoura Boulevard and the intersection of Washington Street and Central Avenue as St. Patrick’s Square for the duration of Friday, March 16, 2018 Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.

 

4. Resolved, that copies of this resolution be presented to Grand Marshal Joseph M. Taylor, Deputy Grand Marshal Josie Logue Tully, Sheriff Armando B, Fontoura and General Chairman Michael D. Byrne.

 

5. A copy of this resolution shall be filed with the Office of the City Clerk.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution hereby proclaims the Municipal Council support in declaring Friday, March 9, 2018 through Friday, March 16, 2018 as Irish Heritage Week in Newark, New Jersey and designating Mulberry Street as Taylor Boulevard, Center Street as Tully Boulevard, Central Avenue as Fontoura Boulevard and the intersection of Washington Street and Central Avenue as St. Patrick’s Square for the duration of Irish Heritage Week and the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.
