WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

                      WHEREAS, the late Sergeant Joseph Anthony Azcona, was born in the City of Newark, answered the noble call to protect and serve, joined the City of Newark, Department of Public Safety, and

 

                      WHEREAS, he had a heart for service that extended beyond his badge, with a steadfast commitment to public service, Sergeant Joseph Anthony Azcona, served the residents of Newark with honor, and compassion, and  unwavering bravery and selflessness, he patrolled the streets with a deep love for the City of Newark and its people, always striving to make a difference; and

 

WHEREAS, having strong work ethic, a love for his community, coupled with kindness and respect for all whom he encountered, Sergeant Joseph Anthony Azcona, patrolled the streets of Newark striving to make a difference, he received a citation from the 4th Precinct in 2020, the Newark Lodge Officer of the Month award in 2022, and a medal for excellence in 2023; and 

 

WHEREAS, Detective Joseph Anthony Azcona’s dedication and sacrifice will never be forgotten, his name will be forever etched into the hearts of the many residents of the City of Newark, along with those who knew him and loved him.

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Carteret Street and Broadway as “Sergeant Joseph A. Azcona Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Carteret and Broadway in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of, Carteret Street and Broadway, ”Sergeant Joseph A. Azcona Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
