Additional Information: 

The Sustainable Jersey Grant Program provides funding to support municipal projects that advance sustainability, environmental stewardship, and community resilience. The program supports local initiatives that reduce environmental impacts, improve public health, and strengthen neighborhoods through innovative and community-driven strategies.

                     WHEREAS, the City of Newark (“City”) desires to participate in the Program and strives to save tax dollars, assure clean land, air and water, improve working and living environments; and

 

WHEREAS, on or about February 16, 2026, on behalf of the City, the Office of Sustainability applied to the Program requesting grant funds in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00) (a copy of the application is attached hereto and made a part hereof); and  

 

WHEREAS, on June 15, 2026, as a result of this application, the City was awarded a Grant in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00), for the Grant period of June 15, 2026 through December 31, 2027 (a copy of the award letter is attached hereto and made a part of here of); and

 

WHEREAS, the City desires to accept the grant award,

 

WHEREAS, no City funds required for acceptance of Grant Funds; and    

 

WHEREAS, the City recognizes that Sustainable Jersey may extend the time of the grant award and/or provide additional funds if made available; and

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1.                     The Mayor of the City of Newark, and/or his designee, the Business Administrator, are hereby authorized to apply for and accept grant funding from the Sustainable Jersey Grant Program in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00) to support urban heat island mitigation efforts through microforest installations and cool roof paint application.

 

2.                     The Municipal Council ratifies its authorization of this application from the date of submission to the date of this authorizing Resolution.

 

3.                     The Mayor and/or his designee, the Business Administrator, are hereby authorized to enter into and execute the award agreement with the Sustainable Jersey Grant Program and to receive and expend the Grant Award in accordance with applicable laws and guidelines for the approved project period.

 

4.                     The Municipal Council hereby ratifies the acceptance of the grant and execution of the agreement from the date of the award to the date of adoption of this authorizing Resolution.

 

5.                     No municipal funds are required for application or acceptance of this grant award.

 

6.                     The Business Administrator shall file a fully executed copy of the grant application and grant agreement in the Office of the City Clerk.

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution ratifies and authorizes the Mayor of the City of Newark, and/or his designee, the Business Administrator, to accept and expend grant funds in the amount of $20,000.00 from the Sustainable Jersey Grant Program. The Grant will support Urban Heat Island mitigation efforts through the installation of a microforest and the application of cool roof reflective paint to reduce extreme heat impacts in vulnerable neighborhoods. No municipal funds are required for this Grant.
