WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, John Newton McCray was born on January 5, 1938 in Georgetown, South Carolina, and departed this life on April 13, 2021; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. McCray graduated from Howard High School and later relocated to New York.  He moved to New Jersey with family members and began working at a mattress company in North Newark, then at Gold Corporation, where he met and married Janie Johnson.  From this union he created a family of two (2) daughters and two (2) adopted sons; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. McCray worked at the Gold Corporation until the mid-1980’s and then for Plastic Color Chip, until his retirement in 2000.  Mr. McCray enjoyed his retirement by traveling to casinos and bingo bus rides.  He also enjoyed singing songs by Sam Cooke, Clyde McPhatter and Mahalia Jackson, western movies and attending Mets baseball games.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

                         1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Scheerer and Renner Avenues as “John Newton McCray Lane.”

 

                     2. The official name of the said street shall remain Scheerer and Renner Avenues  in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution authorizes the renaming of the intersection of Scheerer and Renner Avenues as “John Newton McCray Lane”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
