WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, James Edward Sedgwick, Jr., better known as “Kaboobie” wore Newark pride on his sleeve thereby making him the local griot of high school basketball and football in the City of Newark. He was Newark’s biggest sports fan, who cheered unabashedly for the City’s athletes as if each were his own; and
WHEREAS, born in Newport News Virginia, Mr. Sedgwick entered the Navy and upon his discharge, he later relocated to Newark, in the early 1950’s. Fondly known throughout the metropolitan area as “Kaboobie” in addition to Snow-Ball Man, Coach and the Lollipop Man owned a deli on Watson Avenue producing the much sort after “Fries-in-a-bag”, along with a record store, shoe shine parlor and a dental orthodontic practice, producing dentures, a trade he learned in the Navy. As a selfless entrepreneur, he gave back to the community, sponsored co-ed Small Fry basketball tournaments at the Peshine Avenue School Playground for more than fifty (50) years; and
WHEREAS, his unwavering commitment to the City and its youth through the decades have touched many and due to this commitment, James Edward Sedgwick, Jr. was inducted into the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame for Community Service.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Peshine Avenue and Watson Avenue as “James “Kaboobie” Sedgwick Way.”
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Peshine Avenue and Watson Avenue in their entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Peshine Avenue and Watson Avenue as “James “Kaboobie” Sedgwick Way,” for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
