WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Rashid Wali Sabur, Sr. retired from the City of Newark’s Police Department after thirty-eight (38) years of outstanding and dedicated service, where he distinguished himself as one of its most skilled investigator. He was assigned to several specialized investigative units including the Sex Crimes Unit, Homicide Unit, Cold Case Homicide Unit, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Cold Case Unit, the Polygraph Unit and the Office of the Inspector Generals; and
WHEREAS, Rashid Wali Sabur Sr., was a pillar in the Newark community and has had several of his cases featured on national television programs such as America’s Most Wanted, Dateline and the Discovery Channel. During his meritorious service, he successfully concluded numerous unsolved murders and corruption in city government cases leading to indictments and convictions.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection Hunterdon Street and 16th Avenue as “Rashid Wali Sabur, Sr. Way”.
2. The Municipal Council ratifies this action from December 2, 2017 to the date of adoption of this resolution.
3. The official name of the said streets shall remain Hunterdon Street and 16th Avenue in its entirety.
STATEMENT
This resolution hereby authorizes the naming of the intersection of Hunterdon Street and 16th Avenue as “Rashid Wali Sabur, Sr. Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
