WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS,  Maurice L Hagan, a proud product of the Newark school system and one of its most outstanding track and field athletes, graduated from South Side High School in1964; and   

 

WHEREAS, he excelled in Cross-Country, and outdoor and indoor track, winning State Titles in the 2-mile indoor and the City Championship in the outdoor mile; and

 

WHEREAS, following graduation from South Side, he matriculated to Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, before his studies was interrupted when he was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and proudly served his country as a member of the elite 82nd Airborne Division; and

 

WHEREAS, upon completion of his distinguished tour of duty, Maurice L. Hagan returned to Central State University where he graduated with a bachelor degree in education and a Master of Arts degree from Montclair University; and

 

WHEREAS, extremely committed to his community, he served as an administrator at Essex County College and became an integral member of the Newark business community, including serving as President of the Springfield Avenue Business Association, Director of the Irvington Neighborhood Development Corporation, numerous community and veteran’s organizations and owner of the Coachman’s “N”; and 

 

WHEREAS, inducted in the Newark Athlete Hall Fame in 2013, the numerous contributions attributed to Maurice L. Hagan to Newark community is immeasurable and truly worthy of a lasting recognition and ceremonial renaming of South 14th Street and 19th Avenue“ as Maurice L. Hagan Way.”

 

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of South 14th Street and 19th Avenue “Maurice L. Hagan Way”.

 

2. The official name of said streets shall remain South 14th Street and 19th Avenue.

 

STATEMENT

 

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of South 14th Street and 19th Avenue for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
