WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Edward J. Patrick, was born on November 21, 1929 in Union Springs, Alabama and was the eldest of nine siblings; and
WHEREAS, in 1952-1954, Bishop Patrick served in the U.S. Army in Korea, during the Korean War, then proceeded to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve for eight (8) years. Bishop Patrick received seven (7) Battle Stars of Declaration and, has been honored for his courage, and faith on the battlefield. In Ohio, from Columbia University, Bishop Patrick attained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology; in New York he received a Master of Arts Degree in Theology; in Florida Bishop received his Doctorate Degree in Divinity and in Maryland his doctorate Degree in Homiletics; and
WHEREAS, in 1959, Edward J. Patrick was ordained as a Bishop by his home church, Overcoming Faith Church of God. In 1972, Bishop Patrick established Garden State Temple Church in Newark and in 1974 amended the name of the church to Bethesda Garden Temple to sustain worship and faith that upheld by flat-foot and unadulterated teachings of God and the Holy Bible; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Edward J. Patrick has received many honors and commendations throughout his life, and most recently the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders recognized him; the North Jersey Chapter of the National Action Network recognized him for his social activism, and was presented a Resolution from the Municipal Council and the Honorable Mayor Ras J. Baraka. Bishop Patrick was greatly blessed and happily married to Pastor Cynthia Patrick for many years.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and East Bigelow Street as “Bishop Edward J. Patrick Lane.”
2. The official name of said streets shall remain Elizabeth Avenue and East Bigelow Street, in its entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Elizabeth Avenue and East Bigelow Street as “Bishop Edward J. Patrick Lane”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
