WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, on May 1, 1928, Isaac “Ike” Thomas, Jr.  was born; and

 

WHEREAS, “Ike”, as he was affectionately known, was a long-time resident of Newark, New Jersey and a “mover and shaker” within Newark’s African-American community, where his involvement and strong leadership during Newark’s turbulent 1960’s led to many social gains and advancement for African-Americans and Hispanic politicians, business owners and entrepreneurs; and 

 

WHEREAS, “Ike” served dutifully in the Newark’s Welfare Department serving and assisting its indigent residents as a revered counselor, providing  access to vital services and programs such as housing, food and job assistance, before his appointment by Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson to lead the entire Public Service Employment Program; and

 

WHEREAS, a former Worshipful Master of Samson’s Lodge No.66 F&AM PHA, Newark, New Jersey, “Ike” was an influential member of Newark’s West Ward community where served in numerous leadership positions in the Democratic party, as well as the Ivy Hill Neighborhood Association.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Cameron Road as “Isaac “Ike” Thomas, Jr. Way.”

 

2. The official name of said streets shall remain Eastern Parkway and Cameron Road in its entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Eastern Parkway and Cameron Road as “Isaac “Ike” Thomas, Jr. Way, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
