Whereas, Ordinance 6PSF-E, May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
Whereas, in or about 1999, the City of Newark had a ceremonial celebration for Mr. Don King, naming the intersection of Bergen Street and Custer Avenue as Don King Plaza; and
Whereas, Mr. Don King, a longtime professional boxing promoter and iconic sports personality who promoted the most prominent names in boxing history including Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Roy Jones, Jr. to name a few, has been a major benefactor to numerous Newark-based community groups for many years, especially during the holiday seasons; and
Whereas, his personal history of rising from the depths of despair to becoming one of the most powerful men in sports entertainment is unparalled; and
Whereas, the Newark Municipal Council would like to commemorate his legacy and his contributions to the City of Newark by renaming the intersection of Bergen Street and Custer Avenue in his honor.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize and ratifies the renaming of the corner of Bergen Street and Custer Avenue as Don King Plaza.
2. The names of said streets shall remain Bergen Street and Custer Avenue in their entirety.
