Purpose: Supporting the installation of a statue by the Dominican community honoring the Founding Father of the Dominican Republic, Juan Pablo Duarté.

The statue will be erected at the intersection of Park Avenue and Lake Street, at no cost to the City of Newark.

WHEREAS, the City of Newark (the “City”) has a large community of residents from the Dominican Republic, who have contributed greatly to the economic, cultural and social vitality, and diversity of the City; and
WHEREAS, the Dominican community is desirous of recognizing their Dominican heritage with a sculptor of Juan Pablo Duarté, considered the Founding Father of the Dominican Republic; and
WHEREAS, the original location proposed in 2010 was the southwest corner of Washington Park, however, a new location has been selected for the permanent installation of the completed statue, at the intersection of Park Avenue and Lake Street; and
WHEREAS, there will be no cost to the City for completion and installation of the statue.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council supports the requests of the Dominican community to have the installation of the statue of Juan Pablo Duarté, the Founding Father of the Dominican Republic, at the intersection of Park Avenue and Lake Street.
2. There will be no cost to the City for the completion and installation of the statue.

This Resolution authorizes the Municipal Council to support the installation of the statue of Juan Pablo Duarté, the Founding Father of the Dominican Republic, at the intersection of Park Avenue and Lake Street, at no cost to the City.
