WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

                     WHEREAS, Ortenza Calandra emigrated to the United States from Calabria, Italy at the age of seventeen (17) years old in 1937, where she lived with her family in Belleville, New Jersey, not far from 204 First Avenue in Newark, New Jersey. After meeting her future husband, Luciano Calandra, they planned their future and opened Calandra’s Bakery in 1962 in Newark, New Jersey; and

                     

WHEREAS, through many years of hard work and dedication, Calandra’s Bakery has become a North Ward icon and one of the most recognizable family-owned bakeries in the State of New Jersey.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and First Avenue as Ortenza Calandra Plaza.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Bloomfield Avenue and First Avenue in its entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution hereby authorizes the naming of the intersection of Bloomfield Avenue and First Avenue as Ortenza Calanda Plaza, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
