WHEREAS, the City of Newark recognizes the significance and necessity for global interaction; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark acknowledges the great benefits to its residents from cultural and economic exchanges with other municipalities and towns from around the world; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark has established a Sister Cities Program to facilitate such cultural and economic exchanges; and
WHEREAS, the City of Taoyuan, Taiwan has expressed interest and a willingness to establish a Sister City relationship with the City of Newark because of the shared profiles and similar visions of their respective future development; and
WHEREAS, Taoyuan City, Taiwan, like the City of Newark, is uniquely positioned geographically with an international airport, seaport and an excellent ground transportation system, logistics and warehousing industries. It is viewed as the hub of the Asia Pacific region and is the door that connects Taiwan to the world. The City of Newark feels that it is befitting to establish a meaningful relationship with Taoyuan, Taiwan and forge a viable partnership and cooperation between the two (2) cities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council, on behalf of the residents of the City of Newark, does hereby extend an invitation to the government and the people of Taoyuan City, Taiwan to participate with the City of Newark as its Sister City for the purpose of creating greater mutual understanding and economical and technological benefits between the residents of our two (2) communities.
2. The Office of the City Clerk shall send copies of this resolution to the Mayor and Governing Body of Taoyuan City, Taiwan.
STATEMENT
This resolution invites the citizens of Taoyuan City, Taiwan to join the City of Newark’s Sister Cities Program.
