WHEREAS, by Resolution 7R8-c adopted on December 2, 2020, the Municipal Council approved a ceremonial street designation for “Reverend Carlos Soto Way” located at Oriental Street and Third Avenue; and 

 

WHEREAS, the Municipal Council wishes to amend the location of the ceremonial street designation to the intersection of Mount Pleasant Avenue and Oriental Street as “Reverend Carlos Soto Way”; and

 

WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PDF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Carlos Soto was born on November 3, 1930 in Arenales, Puerto Rico and came to the United States at the age of seventeen (17), moving to the Bronx, New York with his sister; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1961, he met his mentor, the late Reverend Frank Olmeda, and decided to turn his life over to the Lord and answered the call to the ministry; and

 

WHEREAS, he became the President, Deacon, Treasurer and Secretary Council of the Alpha Y Omega Church in Brooklyn, New York and went on to found seven (7) churches in Newark, New Jersey; and

 

WHEREAS, Reverend Carlos Soto lived and served the community of Newark for over fifty (50) years and dedicated his life to ministry, even during the pandemic.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1.                     The Municipal Council hereby amends the intersection from Oriental Street and Third Avenue and authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Mount Pleasant Avenue and Oriental Street as “Reverend Carlos Soto Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Mount Pleasant Avenue and Oriental Street in its entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution amends the intersection from Oriental Street and Third Avenue and authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming to the intersection of Mount Pleasant Avenue and Oriental Street as “Reverend Carlos Soto Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
