WHEREAS, on or about February 13, 2026, on behalf of the City of Newark, the Office of Sustainability applied to the Sustainable Jersey Grant Program requesting funding in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00) (a copy of the application is attached hereto and made a part hereof); and
WHEREAS, a sustainable community seeks to optimize quality of life for its residents by ensuring that its environmental, economic and social objectives are balanced and mutually supportive; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark (“City”) strives to save tax dollars, assure clean land, air and water, improve working and living environments; and
WHEREAS, the City of Newark (“City”) is participating in the Sustainable Jersey Grant funded by PSEG; and
WHEREAS, one of the purposes of the Sustainable Jersey Grant funded by PSEG is to provide resources to municipalities to make progression sustainability issues, and they have created a grant program called the Sustainable Jersey Small Grants funded by PSEG; and
WHEREAS, the Office of Sustainability will coordinate project implementation, including site selection, community engagement, interdepartmental collaboration, and project oversight; and
WHEREAS, this grant requires no municipal cost share or contribution.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Mayor of the City of Newark, and/or his designee, the Business Administrator, is hereby authorized to submit an application for the Sustainable Jersey Grant Program in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00) to support urban heat island mitigation efforts through micro-forest installation and cool roof paint application.
2. The Municipal Council ratifies its authorization of this Application from the date of Application submission to the date of this authorizing Resolution.
3. No municipal funds are required for receipt or acceptance of this Grant Award.
4. The Business Administrator shall file a fully executed copy of the Grant Application in the Office of the City Clerk.
STATEMENT
This Resolution ratifies and authorizes the Mayor of the City of Newark, and/or his designee, the Business Administrator, to submit an application for grant
funds in the amount of Twenty Thousand Dollars and Zero Cents ($20,000.00) from the Sustainable Jersey Grant Program. The grant will support Urban Heat Island mitigation efforts through the installation of a micro-forest and the application of cool roof reflective paint to reduce extreme heat impacts in vulnerable neighborhoods. No municipal funds are required for this grant.
