WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, Carmen Morales, lovingly known as “Ñaña” throughout her beloved North Ward community, was the co-founder, along with her husband Juan Ortiz, of the popular softball league, Padres E Hijos (Father and Sons); and
WHEREAS, her love of community and softball began shortly after her arrival from Caguas, Puerto Rico in 1979; and
WHEREAS, the mother of three (3) sons, she appreciated the value of sports activities and competition in Puerto Rico, and how it brought families together for quality time and community building, henceforth the creation of the Padres E Hijos Softball League; and
WHEREAS, since its inception in 1990, the league has grown to full capacity, engaging community members and creating lifetime memories for its players, coaches, parents and the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of Verona Avenue and Bellaire Place as “Carmen “Ñaña” Morales Way”.
2. The official name of the said streets shall remain Verona Avenue and Bellaire Place in their entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of Verona Avenue and Bellaire Place as “Carmen “Ñaña” Morales Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
