WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-e, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and
WHEREAS, in 1970 the late Honorable Kenneth A. Gibson gained national prominence when he became the first African-American elected Mayor of a major northeastern city; and
WHEREAS, his rise to power is well chronicled as he led New Jersey’s largest city in the aftermath of the devastating Newark “Rebellion” of 1967 and successfully guided the City through America’s turbulent years of the 1970’s and 80’s, featuring racial discord, financial distress and social upheaval; and
WHEREAS, the sincere admiration he received from the community for his stewardship during his sixteen (16) years of leadership has endeared him to the residents of Newark as one of its’ greatest public servants of all time.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:
1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of Broad Street, from Poinier Street to Oriental Street as Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard.
2. The official name of the said street shall remain Broad Street in its’ entirety.

This resolution authorizes the naming of Broad Street, from Poinier Street to Oriental Street as Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
