  WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Fredrica Bey is a lifelong Newark resident, community leader, entrepreneur, educator, and activist whose decades of service have left an indelible mark on the City of Newark and beyond. Born and raised in Newark's historic Third Ward alongside her nine siblings, she attended Newark Public Schools before continuing her education at Essex County College and later studying Business Administration at Kean University from 1972 to 1975; and  

 

WHEREAS, Fredrica began her professional career with the Newark Board of Education's Title I Program, where she served as an administrator from 1980 to 1990. In 1990, she became a licensed Realtor and quickly distinguished herself as one of New Jersey's top-performing real estate professionals, earning numerous awards and recognition as a leading seller throughout the state. She worked as a Residential and Commercial Real Estate Broker from 1990 to 2009 and continues to serve the industry today as a Referral Agent; and

 

 

WHEREAS, as a dedicated civic leader, Fredrica has been actively involved in numerous organizations, including the Essex County Workforce Investment Board, Leadership Newark Alumni, Sisters Coalition, Lifetime Membership in the NAACP, Black Leadership Political Action Committee, League of Women Voters-Greater Newark Chapter, the New Jersey Department of Education Council on Diversity, the New Jersey Association of Realtors, and the National Action Network. Yet among her many affiliations, none holds a more special place in her heart than Women in Support of the Million Man March, Inc. (WISOMMM); and

 

 

WHEREAS, throughout her distinguished career, Fredrica has received numerous honors and awards, including recognition among New Jersey's 100 Most Influential People, the New Jersey Realtors Million Dollar Club Award, the Weichert Realtors Million Dollar Club Award, the NAACP Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award, and the Marcus Garvey Award; and

 

WHEREAS, her service extends to historic preservation and neighborhood leadership as a former Commissioner of the City of Newark Historic Preservation Commission and former President of the South 10th Street Block Association; and

 

WHEREAS, Fredrica Bey is a woman of unwavering faith, vision, and determination that has dedicated her life to empowering communities, preserving history, advancing education, and fighting for justice.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Lincoln Park and Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard (south-west corner) “Fredrica Bey Way”.

 

2. The official name of said streets shall remain Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard and Lincoln Park.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Lincoln Park and Mayor Kenneth A. Gibson Boulevard (south-west corner) for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
