WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Ellyne E. Culver was born on November 25, 1949, in Jersey City, New Jersey, where she was educated through high school and then went on to Fairleigh Dickinson University where she was a stellar student and a Debate Team Champion.  She then decided to move to New York City where she attended The New School, studied Media Theory, Media Production and Media Management and received her Doctoral Degree in Media; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Culver worked for the Port Authority of NY/NJ and was an Adjunct Professor at Rutgers University, Newark Campus.  She also worked at the World Trade Center Observatory, JFK Airport and as a toll collector at the Lincoln Tunnel, while mentoring numerous aspiring professional artists and being a filmmaker and documentarian; and

 

WHEREAS, Dr. Culver was a uniquely iconic figure in the City of Newark, remembered fondly for her tenacity, dedication to healing our community, intellect and insightful, wry wit.  Dr. Culver resided in Newark for fifty (50) years and was the President of the Seth Boyden Elderly Tenants Association.  She also served as a Co-Chair of the Newark Branch of the People’s Organization for Progress (POP) campaigning for social justice.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Evergreen Avenue and Ross Street as “Dr. Ellyne Culver Way”.

 

2.                     The official name of the said streets shall remain Evergreen Avenue and Ross Street in their entirety.

This resolution authorizes the renaming of the intersection of Evergreen Avenue and Ross Street as “Dr. Ellyne Culver Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
