WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

WHEREAS, Kevin Thompson Brown, aka “Lilttle K.A.”, was born on June 26, 1961, in Newark, New Jersey, and began the study of martial arts at the tender age of five (5) years old under the tutelage of famed martial artist Kareem Abdullah, founder of the K.A. System of martial  arts, and quickly achieved success; and

 

WHEREAS, by the age of ten (10) years old, “Little K.A.” had his name featured on the marquee at the world famous Apollo Theater in New York as the “Eighth Wonder of World” and child prodigy; and

 

WHEREAS, Kevin “Little K.A.” Thompson Brown went on to achieve national and international recognition in the world of Sport Karate, traveling the world competing in all three (3) disciplines: Forms, Weapons and Kumite (fighting), where he won numerous championships and was recruited to perform with the sport’s most acclaimed teams and featured in countless magazine articles. He later achieved the pinnacle of success by being inducted into the sport’s International Hall of Fame; and

 

WHEREAS, after retiring from the sport in 1981 he continued to practice and study martial arts and opened the Shakil’s School of Martial Arts Karate Organization in the City of Newark, the first of his several Dojos (karate schools), which became known throughout the Newark metro area as the premier school of martial arts training.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

                         1. The Municipal Council hereby authorizes the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of South Orange Avenue and South 10th Street as “Kevin Thompson Brown Way.”

 

                     2. The official name of the said street shall remain South Orange Avenue South 10th Street in their entirety.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

This resolution authorizes the renaming of the intersection of South Orange Avenue and South 10th Street as “Kevin Thompson Brown Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
