WHEREAS, Ordinance 6PSF-f, adopted on May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc., for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

                      WHEREAS, Susan M. Cleary, a nationally known labor union leader for the powerful and influential 1199J hospital workers union, began her labor union organizing career in the business office of St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City in 1979, where she successfully organized 850 workers into the 1199J Union; and

                     

                     WHEREAS, discovering her passion she rose through the ranks of the powerful and influential 1199J hospital workers union hierarchy, serving in multiple positions including delegate, staff member, Vice-President of the Public Sector Division, Secretary-Treasurer and the Union’s first female President, winning election and re-election in 2008 and 2011, respectively; and  

 

WHEREAS, throughout the years, Susan M. Cleary, became a trail-blazer and received numerous accolades and awards from local, state and federal leaders for her dedication, leadership and commitment to the labor movement; and

WHEREAS, the contributions of Susan M. Cleary to Newark’s labor community and worker’s rights, is immeasurable and worthy of recognition.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

 

1. The Municipal Council does hereby authorize the honorary and ceremonial renaming of the intersection of Alling Street and Market Street as “Susan M. Cleary Way”.

 

2. The official name of said streets shall remain as Alling Street and Market Street in its entirety.

This Resolution authorizes the naming of the intersection of Alling Street and Market Street as “Susan M. Cleary Way”, for honorary and ceremonial purposes.
