                          Whereas, Ordinance 6PSF-E, May 20, 2015, authorizes the designation of an intersection, etc. for honorary and ceremonial purposes; and

 

Whereas, Mrs. Larrie West Stalks, longtime Essex County Registrar, Central Ward Democratic Chairwoman and the first African American woman to serve as a Department head in the city of Newark when she was appointed Director of the Department of Health and Welfare, was one of Newark’s most powerful African American female political leader and power broker in the annals of Newark, Essex County and New Jersey  political histories; and

 

Whereas, the Newark Municipal Council would like to commemorate her legacy to the progress of Newark and the advancement of African Americans  by renaming the intersection Longworth Street and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard in her honor.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, THAT:

                     

1.                     The Municipal Council does hereby authorize and ratify the renaming of the corner of Longworth Street and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard as Larrie West Stalks Way.

 

2.                     The names of said streets shall remain Longworth Street and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in their entirety.
